3D has certainly become a popular format over the past few years and many of this year’s most highly-anticipated films will be presented in 3D. The format was designed to make you feel like you’re part of the movie, however, all 3D experiences are not the same.
IMAX has been revolutionizing the 3D moviegoing experience for more than two decades and we would like to take a moment to show you what makes IMAX® 3D movies so different.

Visual effects were prevalent in many of the top films featured in IMAX this year. Each year the Academy chooses the best of the best to receive an Oscar® for Best Visual Effects. We are excited to announce that four of the five nominees have been featured in IMAX® theatres. The final list of nominees includes Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Marvel’s The Avengers from Joss Whedon, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman, which is the only title not shown in IMAX theatres. These films competed with some of 2012’s top films to nab the nomination, and we’re taking a moment to highlight this year’s nominees. Below is a snapshot of the IMAX releases.
