Hi! I’m Adam from the IMAX communications team. This week some members of the IMAX team headed to Austin, Texas for the 2013 SXSW Conference- the convergence of all things interactive, film and music.
It was an extremely interesting and busy week as the team attended several industry panels and events, met with partners and hosted IMAX’s first ever SXSW party. Not to mention consuming an enormous amount of delicious BBQ.
I will be discussing some of the key trends we observed at the conference next week, but for now I wanted to provide a recap of some of my highlights.

Advancements in technology are continually opening up new ways for us to experience movies. At IMAX, we’re committed to working with filmmakers to support and help deliver their creative vision to audiences across the globe.
In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Peter Jackson has pushed the boundaries of new filmmaking techniques by capturing the movie in high frame rate (HFR) 3D – marking the first use of this method in a major motion picture release. In addition to the IMAX® and IMAX® 3D presentations, the film will also be shown using a higher frame rate in select IMAX® theatres.
What is High Frame Rate 3D (HFR 3D)?
Frame rates refer to the number of images (frames) displayed by a projector in one second. The current standard in cinemas worldwide is 24 frames per second (fps). HFR 3D productions of 48 fps record and play visuals at twice the current rate, which more closely approximates what the human eye actually sees. The higher 48fps rate provides enhanced clarity and reduces motion blur during action sequences, artifacts, judder and strobing.
Check out the list below for IMAX theatres that will be playing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in HFR 3D. For a full list of nearby theatres playing The Hobbit, click here.

Aspect Ratio: Your Point-of-View
Experiencing your favorite movie in IMAX consists of plenty of speechless moments but isn’t quiet at all. It’s filled with breathtaking gasps and frightening shrieks as you assume the part of the hero or even the villain; taking death-defying leaps that make you clinch the hand of your neighbor and close your eyes before you hit the ground. Yes, IMAX is that real and there are several elements that go into creating those moments that you’ll never forget.
But what is it that makes you nearly lose your lunch from looking down from the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, with Tom Cruise in M:I4 or swinging from New York’s skyscapers with Spider-Man? Well it’s actually several things that go into creating that experience, one of which is the aspect ratio of the scene, which helps bring you into the action of the film.

One IMAX Employee’s Encounter with Steve Jobs and Pixar

There’s a lot to be said about the movies that stay on your mind for months before they premiere, that convince you to stand in long lines for advance tickets and force you to stay up way past your bedtime to be the first to be transported from a seat in the movies to another world. IMAX not only understands the obsession, we take part in it and find a way to make your moviegoing experience an event that you’ll never forget.
We’re constantly searching for the best ways to connect with the people that matter most, our fans…fanboys and fangirls that is. We’ve launched the IMAX blog to give you access to what goes on inside IMAX and to find out what matters most to you. Our blog will feature behind-the-scenes access to our technology, the evolution of IMAX films and guest expert bloggers who help to bring the most immersive movie experience to you, at each IMAX® theater, every showing.
