‘Rescue 3D’ Makes Spectacular Use of IMAX

CHICAGO – With the tenth anniversary of September 11th on the horizon, “Rescue 3D” is a nice reminder of the first responders who step into the disasters, and the film itself is an incredible use of the 3D technology, best utilized on the IMAX screen. The documentary profiles four “rescue” operatives, covering the land (firefighter), sea (naval vessel) and air (pilots) as they go about the endless hours of training for the just-in-case scenario. Tornado chasers' truck shoots IMAX from inside storms

Filmmaker Sean Casey has been chasing tornadoes for more than a decade. And it takes one tough ride to get in and out of the violent storms safely. We met up with the storm chaser this week at The Tech Museum in San Jose, Calif., where his IMAX film, Tornado Alley, opens today. Driving directly into violent storms with an Imax camera, Casey attempts to document a high-definition view of a direct hit from an F3 tornado, giving moviegoers a large-format view of one of nature's most violent displays. (F3 tornadoes are considered severe and characterize a storm with winds of 158 mph to 206 mph.) Read More

While Tsui Hark certainly has his fans around the world, for us, we’re mostly waiting for him to make something to match the inspired audacity of 2000’s “Time And Tide.” As anyone who has seen that movie knows, it’s a ridiculously awesome and totally bonkers action flick that still has some of its setpieces seared into our brain (the shootout between guys scaling two tenement buildings anyone?). Everything since has been kind of disappointing, just lacking the sheer balls-out verve of that flick. Read More
IMAX to Super-Size First Chinese Language 3D Movie

TORONTO -- Imax Corp. on Wednesday said it will super-size the $35 million epic Flying Swords of Dragon Gate from China’s Bona Film Group, ahead of a Christmas release. Flying Swords comes from director Tsui Hark, with Jet Li in the lead. IMAX will digitally re-master the 3D martial arts movie into its own 3D format, for release to IMAX theatres in China day-and-date in December 2011. Flying Swords will be the first Chinese-language project to be released in Imax 3D, and the third Chinese language movie released by IMAX. Read More
Sneak peek: 'Happy Feet Two in 3D'

George Miller wasn't looking to make back-to-back cartoons about the environmentally fragile residents of Antarctica. But Mother Nature can be a wicked executive producer, Miller has learned. "I was all set to do another Mad Max in Australia," he says. "And it kept raining. And raining. And raining. After about 12 months, we decided to do Happy Feet Two instead." Miller, a chameleon director whose credits include the Mad Max series, the Babe franchise and now the Happy Feet story, says he plans to return to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max when he's done with the pre-apocalyptic world of Happy Feet Two in 3D, which hits theaters Nov. 18.
