'Gravity' Passes $100M In IMAX

As the headline states, Gravity has become the third film in history to earn $100 million worldwide in IMAX engagements alone. For the record, the other two films were Avatar and The Dark Knight Rises.  Avatar earned $2.78 billion globally and The Dark Knight Rises earned $1.084 billion worldwide. Comparatively, Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity has earned “just” $695 million worldwide. Thus, the $100m benchmark is especially worthwhile considering the much larger percentage of tickets sold in the large-screen format, in this case about 15% of its total gross.

China's Wanda Plans to Open 80 IMAX Theaters by 2021

BEIJING—China's Wanda Cinema Line Corp. is expanding its partnership with IMAX Corp. IMX.T +3.92% , signing on 80 new IMAX theaters in a deal that would make China the big-screen company's largest market.

Wanda, a unit of real estate conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group Co. and China's largest movie-theater chain by outlets, plans to open the 80 IMAX theaters by 2021, rolling out 20 each year starting in 2016, said IMAX Chief Executive Richard Gelfond. The company declined to disclose investment details of the deal.
