IMAX Congratulates Visual Effects Oscar Noms

By IMAX auf Januar 12, 2013

Visual effects were prevalent in many of the top films featured in IMAX this year. Each year the Academy chooses the best of the best to receive an Oscar® for Best Visual Effects. We are excited to announce that four of the five nominees have been featured in IMAX® theatres. The final list of nominees includes Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Marvel’s The Avengers from Joss Whedon, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman, which is the only title not shown in IMAX theatres. These films competed with some of 2012’s top films to nab the nomination, and we’re taking a moment to highlight this year’s nominees. Below is a snapshot of the IMAX releases.

Currently in IMAX® theatres, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey features many impressive scenes that leave audiences in awe as they follow Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and the 13 dwarves on their journey through Middle-earth. We can’t forget the scene where the Dwarves witness the fight of the Stone Giants.

Marvel’s The Avengers left the summer blazing when Nick Fury assembled a team of superheroes to protect the world from the vengeance of Loki.  Based on the ever-popular comic book series, this film features awesome effects and nonstop action. The Official Channel of Industrial Light & Magic posted Behind the Magic: The Visual Effects of The Avengers which highlights the visual effects used in the film. Check it out!

Ridley Scott’s sci-fi thriller, Prometheus took us on a journey with a team of explorers to discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth. Audiences were taken into the darkest corners of the universe as the explorers fought a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Director Ang Lee captivated audiences in Life of Pi, which was released in select international IMAX theatres. This groundbreaking film takes audiences on a breathtaking adventure with a young man who survived a disaster at sea, and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery.

The Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee selects nominees based on the contribution the visual effects make to the overall production, and the artistry, skill and fidelity with which the visual illusions are achieved. Many great films were reviewed but only a few were able to nab a nomination.

IMAX would like to send our biggest CONGRATULATIONS to the filmmakers who have pushed the envelope to deliver more to audiences across the globe. We are proud to have had the opportunity to present these great films in IMAX theatres.

Congratulations nominees!
