New Star Trek Into Darkness IMAX FANFIX Print

We spoke to the amazing artist Mark Englert about his experience creating the IMAX FANFIX print for Star Trek Into Darkness – follow along with Mark as he details the process and even shares some of his earlier versions of the artwork below.

Creating the IMAX FANFIX™ for Star Trek Into Darkness

When Jensen from Gallery 1988 contacted me asking if I liked Star Trek, I provided the understated response of “yes”. My love for Star Trek was nothing short of a love affair. For years I’ve been a Trek fan – I’ve watched every film and television incarnation of the franchise and was blown away by JJ Abrams’ 2009 revamp.

So yes, I LOVE Star Trek, in fact, the first movie I ever attended was Star Trek the Motion Picture when I was just a few months old.

Working with Gallery 1988, Bad Robot, Paramount Pictures and IMAX (to launch the FANFIX™ program) was a perfect match. The opportunity to create not one, but two versions for the fans to enjoy was more than a great opportunity – it was the chance of a lifetime.

I eagerly began my sketch of the Enterprise. I hadn’t seen the movie but the Enterprise in space was a guarantee and the image was clearly etched in my mind. Check out my original sketch and re-sketch for Photoshop below.

Based on the trailers it was clear that there was an imminent threat to the Earth, so I decided to have the Enterprise in Earth’s orbit and use coloring as a way to imply the danger facing the Earth.

 

This process was pretty lengthy since the image is fairly simple, the composition was vitally important. For hours, I moved around and tinkered with the major shapes until I arrived at something I found pleasing and decided to use the image below.

 

To ensure consistency with my previous work, I approached this as if it were a screen print. If it were printed on black paper it would be a five-color screen print. For the first IMAX FANFIX print, I chose a red color for the star field, which made the Earth and the Enterprise stand out.

When I was approached to do a second colorway, my first instinct was to go the opposite direction of the looming threat implied by the red star field of the first version. Going with a cool, aqua-green changes the entire mood of the piece to be more fitting to the peaceful, exploratory nature of Starfleet. This color scheme was used for the 2nd IMAX FANFIX print. Lastly, I focused on rendering more clouds on Earth and adding white stars with a bit of a motion blur to create a more dramatic look which made the Enterprise stand out more.

When the 2009 Star Trek released, the theatre had a scale model of the new Enterprise on display. Ironically I was able to use the photos I took of the display to create the details of the Enterprise featured in the FANFIX print.

Don’t Forget, It GLOWS!

The first FANFIX was given to fans at the first showing of Star Trek Into Darkness at IMAX theatres. The response to the prints was great because most fans weren’t expecting the glow in the dark feature which made the print oh so sweet.

Creating the glow-in-the-dark effect on a film that was veiled by secrecy proved to be an awesome challenge. I was forced to use my imagination to develop a mock-up that required a bit of back and forth.

The above version was designed with an image of John Harrison floating in space in a stand-off with the Enterprise. Unfortunately that version didn’t make the cut.

I was then given a bit more information, specifically the idea of the Enterprise facing down a larger version of herself. Thus, the birth of the “evil” glow-in-the-dark Enterprise. See below:

 

That was just a start but I continued with the “evil” Enterprise idea and decided to hide that ship in the glow-in-the-dark. Only hours before the final file was due, I got to screen the movie which inspired the addition of the two small specks hurtling through space toward the Vengence.
