IMAX 101: DMR (Video)

Por IMAX en la enero 30, 2013

When seeing a movie in an IMAX® theatre, it’s like seeing a different movie altogether. Everything from the movie itself to the theatre’s technology and design has been developed and customized to make you believe you’re part of the action. One of the key ingredients to creating The IMAX Experience® is IMAX® DMR, or digital re-mastering.

There are two ways to create an IMAX movie. It can either be captured with the extremely high resolution IMAX® cameras or go through IMAX’s proprietary DMR process to enhance the film’s image and audio.

So what exactly does IMAX’s DMR process entail? Check out our latest IMAX 101 featuring DMR technology to find out:

Now that you’ve heard it from Coco, let’s take a moment to recap the DMR process.

What is DMR you ask?

In technical terms, DMR is IMAX’s digital re-mastering process which combines proprietary algorithms with the talents of IMAX’s in-house image specialists.

Simply put, it’s our way of enhancing the image and sound quality of movies to prepare them for IMAX presentation.

When a movie is going to be released in IMAX®, it gets special treatment. Many of your favorite Hollywood blockbusters have been transformed, taking them from awesome to spectacular!

Our image specialists review the movie, shot by shot, removing visual noise (random variation of brightness and color),

and enhancing the image to optimize every frame for The IMAX Experience.

By working directly with the filmmakers, we’re able to reveal the fine details that were always there, but might have gone unnoticed. Our goal is to always help each filmmaker bring their creative vision to life.

So what about the sound?

We all know that sound plays a HUGE part in creating an immersive experience. That’s why our DMR process enhances the sound as well as the image.

Much like our image enhancement process, the movie’s soundtrack also undergoes a transformation. Our sound specialists go back to the “stems” – the original tracks from the movie – and work with the filmmakers to create a unique and optimized soundtrack that takes full advantage of IMAX’s responsive sound system.

So as you can see, a lot goes into creating the most immersive moviegoing experience. While there are several other important components to The IMAX Experience, it all starts with ensuring that we get the highest quality content to our projection and sound systems.

We love movies and that’s why we focus on what it takes to bring them to life. Check out our most recent DMR titles by visiting our website: www.imax.com/movies.
