As the renovation of the historic TCL Chinese Theatre reaches its final stages, IMAX’s very own Phil Groves had the pleasure of attending the ceremonious screen-raising of Hollywood’s first IMAX® theatre. The theatre, which has undergone its first significant makeover in 85 years, will reopen with the premiere of the beloved classic Wizard of Oz on Sept. 15 and will open to the public on Sept. 20.

Raising the 94 foot screen was a task fit for a team. In total, 28 technicians worked to lift the screen – which took a total of 4 hours to complete. You can see in the pictures below the flexible screen had to be spread throughout the auditorium to prep for the “big lift”. Although the screen appears flexible, it weighs approximately 1000 pounds.
