STS-125: Crew for the Final Shuttle Mission to Hubble
Space Telescope
Junior Mission Experts Initiative
How it works:
Space Port Indiana and The IMAX Theater in the Indiana
State Museum with support from the Indiana Space Grant Consortium
will choose 7 students to track the progress of NASA Mission STS
-125, the Hubble repair project. Each student chosen will be assigned
to track the mission contributions of a crew member aboard STS-125
which includes 7 astronauts. The 11 day mission is scheduled to
launch on May 12th 2009.
Students must be a junior or senior in high school
to qualify, must demonstrate an interest and aptitude for space
exploration and commit to the project from April of 2009 to May
of 2010 when the IMAX film Hubble 3D is scheduled to open.
Each student will be asked to study a portion of
the mission for which he or she is assigned and periodically report
on the progress of the mission. Each Junior Mission Expert will
have an opportunity to present their findings to the public at
the IMAX Theater, at the Space Port Indiana Summer Camp, at the
Indiana State Fair and other locations where they will be among
the team of Junior Mission Experts providing insight to the mission.
Students will also participate in the launch of the IMAX film
Hubble 3D in the spring of 2010.
The IMAX Theater and Space Port Indiana will provide
students with resources and contacts needed to complete their
assignments. Junior Mission Experts will also be provided with
mission jump suit uniforms complete with official NASA Mission
STS 125 patches.
As a reward for successfully completing the project
each of the 7 members of the Junior Mission Experts team will
receive a $1,000 scholarship for his or her service to be used
at an Indiana college or university affiliated with the Indiana
Space Grant Consortium.
Funding for the scholarships will be provided
by a grant from the NASA funded Indiana Space Grant Consortium.
