I recently got an exclusive first look at the company's next-generation digital laser projectors, and I walked away from the experience wanting to see every single movie remastered and projected using the new technology.

Industry giant Carnival's next vessel, the Carnival Vista, will feature an 800-foot-long track suspended around its top deck that passengers can circle in peddle-powered capsules, the line revealed Thursday at a New York event.
Dubbed the SkyRide, it's being billed as the cruise industry's first pedal-powered, open-air aerial attraction and is just one of several first-for-the-industry features planned for the ship.
Carnival Vista also will have the first IMAX Theater at sea and a record size, 455-foot-long water tube attraction, Carnival announced.

While movie going is in spiral, one corner of Hollywood’s box office landscape is defying the downturn: IMAX.
In the face of overall revenues last year of just $10.3 billion, a five percent dip from 2013, the colossally-screened exhibitor has seen exponential growth. In 2008, IMAX introduced “The Dark Knight” to 147 theaters. Four years later, IMAX splashed “The Dark Knight Rises” in 600 theaters.

Netflix is challenging Hollywood’s carefully protected system of release “windows” for films by striking a deal with the Weinstein Company to premiere the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on its streaming service.

Denzel Washington and his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua celebrated the latest chapter of their ongoing partnership on Monday night with the New York City premiere of their new film The Equalizer.
Both Washington and Fuqua stressed that their prior collaboration, on the 2001 film for which Washington won the best actor Oscar, helped them quickly get into a groove.
"We know each other, so there's a shorthand. And he knows what he's doing, so I don't have to worry about what he's doing; I just have to worry about what I'm doing and come to work with a fully realized character," Washington told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet.
Later at the afterparty Fuqua said it was almost a seamless transition, despite the decade-plus gap between the two films.

IMAX Corp. might be finally catching a break after what has been a slow summer for blockbusters this year.
Moviegoers streamed to theaters to catch the “Guardians of the Galaxy,” allowing the sci-fi adventure to smash August box office records and rake in $94 million in its opening weekend. And it appears the big-budget film from Marvel Studios played well on IMAX theaters around the world as the company also notched record ticket sales.
The Toronto company sold about $16.5 million in "Guardians" tickets globally, nearly tripling the previous August best of $5.9 million by “Elysium.” “Guardians” brought $11.5 million domestically on 354 IMAX screens, and eight of the 10 best performing locations for the movie were IMAX auditoriums. There are about 750 commercial IMAX theaters worldwide.
Many of Hollywood’s biggest franchises — like “The Hunger Games,” “Transformers” and “Star Wars,” to name a few — have followed the example set by Christopher Nolan in “The Dark Knight” and filmed sequences in IMAX®.
The summer of the blockbuster movie is alive and well, but that liveliness might not e so visible in the U.S. Box office receipts here are flat to down during the last few years, as more consumers opt for fancy home entertainment systems and mobile devices to watch their flicks. But internationally, sales are soaring, as movie-goers in China, Russia and Latin America pay up to see blockbusters. In the U.S., the average price of a movie ticket can be anywhere from $8 to $10, but a ticket to an IMAX theater can be up to $13 to $15 because of a more innovative 3-D and IMAX experience. Prices have gone up because of the popularity of 3-D and IMAX films such as Star Trek: Into Darkness and Iron Man 3. But nowhere is the popularity as strong and as pricey as in places such as emerging markets, where consumers are soaking up one of the USA's greatest exports: entertainment. I caught up with the CEO of IMAX, Richard Gelfond to talk growth around the world. Our interview follows, edited for clarity and length.

TORONTO – IMAX is expanding its presence in South Africa after inking a two-theater deal with Ster-Kinekor Theaters.
The division of Primedia Group will add a theater to an upcoming multiplex in Pretoria East, and a second to another new multiplex in Johannesburg, to bring its stable of IMAX theaters to three.
Ster-Kinekor opened an initial IMAX screen in Durban nine months ago.
The latest agreement with the South African exhibitor is part of a strategy by IMAX, led by Andrew Cripps, president of IMAX EMEA, to expand beyond the North American market into new emerging world markets.

USC is getting a giant screen courtesy of IMAX®
The Canadian theater technology company announced Wednesday that it was donating an IMAX® theater system to USC's School of Cinematic Arts.
The IMAX® theater will be installed in a new auditorium donated by Michelle and Kevin Douglas, IMAX's largest shareholders, at the cinema school's Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts.

The theater will be part of a 35,000-square-foot, fully digital training center that will serve as a research facility and teaching facility for students to learn IMAX® filmmaking as well as location-based entertainment and multi-player game design.

IMAX®, Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures have announced that DRACULA UNTOLD, the Dracula origins story starring Luke Evans, will be digitally remastered and released in IMAX® across the globe on 2nd October, and in North America on 17th October.
The film is directed by Gary Shore and produced by Michael De Lucas, and also stars Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, Diarmaid Murtagh and Samantha Barks.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes will be released in select IMAX® theaters this August. The film is produced by Michael Bay, who is known for making the kind of big, explodey movies that can benefit from their big explosions being made larger than live through the IMAX® format.

IMAX® will develop documentaries using a newly created $50 million fund, with the wide-screen company promising a series of films that will deal with such heady topics as globalization, technology and space, but with a sense of humor.
“This is an opportunity to reset the tone of these movies — to make them a little edgier and hipper,” said Greg Foster, chairman and president of IMAX Entertainment®. “We need to make movies that are a little bit more reflective of third graders today as opposed to third graders 25 years ago and that’s what these movies are about.”
For a 60-year-old mutant lizard, Godzilla still has plenty of blockbuster power.
The giant lizard’s latest eponymous film garnered a better-than-expected $93 million in U.S. ticket sales in its opening weekend and another $103 million from 64 overseas markets, the best international debut so far this year. Godzilla crushed in the U.K. and Russia, while Mexico—normally a tiny movie market—ended up as the movie’s third-biggest foreign box office, with $9 million in ticket sales.
IMAX® has announced its first commercial theatre deal for Scandinavia, with Nordic Cinema Group.
The IMAX® in the SF Bio anchor multiplex at the Mall of Scandinavia in Stockholm will open in autumn 2015.
IMAX® president of EMEA Andrew Cripps told Screen in Cannes that in Nordic Cinema Group “we couldn’t pick a better partner…I hope it’s a relationship we can build on because Scandinavia is very important to us.”
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens this weekend, and some moviegoers will pay up to $6 more to see it in IMAX, where the screens are bigger and the action should be more intense. "So real you can feel it in your bones," is how IMAX puts it. But is the IMAX at the multiplex the same as the IMAX you can see at the museum?
From underwater to outer space, IMAX has produced some astounding images of the natural world. One of the first IMAX films, To Fly, has been showing at the Smithsonian since 1976 and is still popular.
IMAX was co-founded in the late 1960s by a group of friends in Canada who had filmmaking and engineering experience. Large format films existed, but they wanted to revolutionize them. With public funding, they built special theaters with screens reaching six stories high and seven stories wide, surround sound and seats on a steep slope that put you even closer to the action. They used cameras with triple-width, 70 millimeter film — 10 times the size as what's used in ordinary cameras.

BEIJING—IMAX Corp. plans to sell a 20% stake in its Chinese business to two China-focused investor groups in an $80 million deal that the big-movie-screen operator hopes will pave the way for expansion and an eventual public listing.
IMAX Chief Executive Richard Gelfond said in an interview that investment fund China Media Capital and private-equity firm FountainVest Partners would pay $40 million each for 10% stakes by early 2015. He said the deal gives IMAX local partners who will open up expansion opportunities in one of its most important markets.
The investors will shepherd a public offering of shares of the China operation, IMAX China Holding Inc., in the next five years, Mr. Gelfond said. IMAX China will be paying IMAX Corp. an ongoing trademark and licensing fee for the right to use the IMAX trademark in China, a spokeswoman said.
Mega-screen company IMAX is moving forward with its laser technology, signing 63 laser projectors to be installed worldwide over the next several years, with the majority of the new systems ear marked for Greater China.
IMAX has made significant inroads into China throughout the last few years, expanding its brand with a growing infrastructure. The IMAX laser projectors, which are developed through a partnership with Kodak and Barco, total 43 on the mainland, with the country’s largest exhib Wanda footing the bill for all but three.
Walt Disney Co. and IMAX Corp. agreed to release a handful of upcoming Disney films in IMAX theaters, with plans to team up on several Marvel films and a Star Wars movie in 2015.
The deal continues IMAX and Disney's long-running relationship and will involve IMAX being part of Disney's release strategy for several major films, including this year's "Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Maleficent," and "Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy," as well as next year's "Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Tomorrowland" and "Star Wars: Episode VII."
Last year, the two companies agreed to co-produce their first movie together, expanding the relationship between the entertainment giant and the operator of theaters known for large floor-to-ceiling curved screens.
The companies have previously collaborated together on the distribution of numerous films such as "Fantasia 2000" and "Oz the Great and Powerful."

Renowned big-screen cinema purveyor IMAX Corp. is set to break ground Thursday on a new West Coast headquarters that will house two large screening rooms, offices and production facilities for moviemakers.
The $45-million complex is being built in the commercial district of Playa Vista, a planned community south of Marina del Rey.
IMAX's property will rise at the corner of Westlawn Avenue and Millennium Drive, next to the massive hangar where aerospace mogul Howard Hughes built his infamous wooden transport plane known as the Spruce Goose.
Developer Lincoln Property Co. is building the 66,000-square-foot facility that IMAX will own. Lincoln also built more than 800,000 square feet of offices at Playa Vista and is developing the $260-million Runway office, retail and housing project that will serve as Playa Vista's downtown.

As the headline states, Gravity has become the third film in history to earn $100 million worldwide in IMAX engagements alone. For the record, the other two films were Avatar and The Dark Knight Rises. Avatar earned $2.78 billion globally and The Dark Knight Rises earned $1.084 billion worldwide. Comparatively, Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity has earned “just” $695 million worldwide. Thus, the $100m benchmark is especially worthwhile considering the much larger percentage of tickets sold in the large-screen format, in this case about 15% of its total gross.
Martial arts action film posts a $1.8M first day on its way to a $50M opening on Chinese New Year weekend
IMAX Theaters said Tuesday that it took in a single-day record $1.8 million in China on Friday, powered by the local hit “The Monkey King.”
The martial arts action film’s debut on 140 IMAX screens came on the first day of the Chinese New Year, and topped the $1.5 million mark set by Disney and Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” in 2013. It took in $4.5 million from IMAX sites over its first three days.
It was a huge overall weekend at the Mainland box office, and Chinese films were first and second worldwide.
The 3D “The Monkey King,” starring Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok and Donnie Yen, rolled up more than $51 million over the weekend. It was produced by Filmko Pictures and China Film Group, and directed by Pou-Soi Cheang.

TORONTO -- IMAX has sold another theater to Sasaki Kogyo, set to be the first in Japan to install next-generation laser projection technology.
The theater, to operate under the Cinema Sunshine brand in a new multiplex in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district, will have a projection system that promises far better brightness and clarity than rival movie projectors.
No word on when the latest Cinema Sunshine IMAX theater will open or install laser projection.
When Katniss Everdeen rises from an underground elevator into the arena in Hunger Games: Catching Fire, IMAX viewers will see the film's visuals dramatically change.
The 50-minute arena sequence in this Hunger Games sequel has been formatted for IMAX, resulting in an immersive, larger aspect ratio. Instead of a typical widescreen image, with black bars on top and bottom, the IMAX image expands vertically to fill the entire screen when Katniss (played by Jennifer Lawrence) enters the battlefield.
The first few minutes of the changeover are particularly captivating, as water violently splashes around each character. The trees come alive in both color and movement, and you can see the sweat collect on the tributes' faces. The encompassing experience makes viewers feel as though they are in the arena.
"When I signed on to do the movie, I knew very early on that the arena portion would work very well with IMAX," Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence told Mashable. "The switch to IMAX hits you hard. It's stunning."

At a time when moviegoing in the U.S. is down year- over-year, IMAX Corp. is on fire. The large-format exhibitor, once relegated to museums, is responsible for more than 15 percent of Gravity's gross, with moviegoers shelling out $20 or more a head in big cities. The Toronto-based, 550-employee company has seen its revenue balloon from $102.7 million in 2008 to $284.3 million in 2012 thanks in large part to Hollywood tentpoles, while its stock has rocketed from $3.35 a share in early November 2008 to around $30 today. IMAX's global creative czar is Greg Foster, 53, whom IMAX Corp. CEO Rich Gelfond promoted earlier this year to CEO of IMAX Entertainment in recognition of Foster's leadership in building the company's commercial slate and establishing relationships with studios. Foster, who spent 15 years at MGM before joining IMAX in 2001, also oversees the documentaries financed and produced by IMAX. The distributor will release a total of 40 films this year. Tentpoles can see an enormous boost from their IMAX runs; it's not uncommon to add $70 million or more to their bottom line.
Typically, Foster can be found meeting with filmmakers in his Santa Monica office or crisscrossing the globe, tending to 650 commercial IMAX theaters in 56 countries, including 350 sites in North America (not including 125 museum and other institutional locations). The married father of three grown sons remains a fierce family man and won't receive email via his smartphone. He recently sat down with THR to discuss what Hollywood can do better and why IMAX is on such a roll.

HONG KONG — IMAX Corporation, the Canadian company that has long designed and manufactured large-screen cinema equipment on the outskirts of Toronto, plans to announce on Tuesday in Los Angeles that it has set up a joint venture with a Chinese multinational to develop and manufacture $250,000 home theater systems in China.
IMAX’s decision to set up a joint venture with the Shenzhen-based TCL Multimedia Technology Holdings Limited is the latest sign of the powerful lure that China has become for Hollywood and its suppliers. Nicole Kidman, John Travolta, Leonardo DiCaprio and Zhang Ziyi showed up last month in Qingdao, a beach resort in northeastern China, to attend the announcement of a movie-themed real estate development that is to include 20 movie sound sets.
IMAX decided on a joint venture with TCL for the new systems primarily because it expects China to be the largest market for them, Richard L. Gelfond, the chief executive of IMAX, said in a telephone interview. IMAX also concluded that it needed an alliance with a large television manufacturer in order to handle the distribution and service issues associated with selling to a broader range of households, he said.
While acknowledging that low production costs in China had also been an attraction, Mr. Gelfond said that they had not been central. “It’s not because of the low-end cost structure but because it’s the market,” he said.
IMAX already makes $2 million home theater systems for extremely wealthy households at its base in Mississauga, Ontario, and will continue to do so.

Those who can afford to pay $500 to watch a newly released movie in their own home can now add another luxury perk: the ability to watch it on a giant IMAX screen.
IMAX Corp. has agreed to pay about $2.5 million to acquire up to 20% stake in Prima Cinema Inc., the San Diego-area company that releases premium-priced movies into the home when they are released in theaters.
Under the agreement, set to be announced Monday morning, IMAX will use Prima’s service for its luxury private theaters, which cost $2.5 million and have 20-foot-wide screens.
The deal also makes IMAX the exclusive distributor of Prima's systems over the next five years in China, where the Toronto-based technology company has aggressively expanded. China is now the world's second-largest movie market.
The investment in Prima is part of a broader strategy by IMAX to bring its cinema technology into the home, company executives said.

Deal With Dalian Wanda Follows Pact With South Korean Partner
BEIJING—IMAX Corp. IMX.T -0.15%is joining with China's largest cinema chain to build as many as 120 new theaters in the country, dwarfing a deal that the company announced with a Korean partner last week.
The Chinese deal is IMAX's latest to target Asian consumers' increasing demand for watching Hollywood blockbusters on bigger, more immersive screens.
Under the agreement, IMAX will add between 40 and 120 theaters. At most, it would bring to 381 the number of IMAX theaters open or planned in China, with Wanda Cinema Line Corp. running up to 210 of them.
Wanda will build 40 new theaters by 2017 and the rest by 2020, said Wanda General Manager Jerry Ye.
There were 126 IMAX theaters in operation in China at the end of June. Greater China accounted for 15% of IMAX's first-half revenue.
The Canada-based company said last week that it would add 30 IMAX screens in China and five in South Korea with Korean partner CJ CGV Co. 079160.SE +0.20%
If Wanda builds all 120 theaters, IMAX would generate as much revenue from China as the U.S., said IMAX Chief Executive Richard Gelfond.

SEOUL—IMAX Corp. and its South Korean partner plan to add 30 IMAX movie screens in China and five in South Korea.
The expansion, to be announced in coming days, is aimed at capitalizing on rising entertainment spending by the Chinese middle class and demand for the immersive high-resolution technology in Korea, IMAX Chief Executive Richard Gelfond said.
The project is a joint venture with the overseas business arm of South Korea's largest theater chain, CJ CGV Co.
The deal will bring the number of IMAX screens scheduled for construction in China to 140 and in South Korea to 10. There were 118 IMAX screens in operation in China and 12 in South Korea at the end of March.
"What IMAX is doing is following the audience around the world," Mr. Gelfond said.
China is the world's second-largest movie market by box-office revenue, behind the U.S., and the number of screens in China is expected to eclipse that of North America by 2020, according to Ernst & Young.

Nearly 75 years after its dazzling Technicolor debut, The Wizard of Oz will be converted to 3-D and IMAX for a one-week theatrical run in September, Warner Bros. and IMAX officials will announce Tuesday.
The restoration marks the film industry's highest-profile conversion yet of a 2-D classic. Already, studios have remastered films including Titanic, Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
But Oz "is as iconic as they come," says Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax Entertainment. "It was one of the first movies that truly came out at you with an explosion of color."
Studio execs hope to come at audiences with an enhanced look at the yellow brick road: namely, digitally enhanced sound and images to bring Dorothy and company into 3-D and IMAX's colossal format. Warner Bros. quietly remastered the film for months before bringing the reel to IMAX for a test run.

IMAX is announcing plans Tuesday to upgrade the Smithsonian's three theaters in 2014. New technology uses lasers instead of light bulbs to light giant movie screens.

BEIJING-IMAX Corp. is benefiting from explosive growth in movie-going in China, and hasn't seen any impact from the wider economic slowdown there, Chief Executive Richard Gelfond said.
At the same time, the company is signing deals to show more Chinese-made films on its giant, high-resolution screens--a hedge against Chinese regulators' practice of imposing blackout periods on screenings of foreign films, Mr. Gelfond told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview.
The large-screen company has been looking to partner on more local-language movie releases with a eye on potentially exporting them to other large markets.
IMAX Corp. and Chinese film studio Huayi Bros. Group on Wednesday unveiled an expansion of their partnership that had started with the theatrical release of Aftershock: The IMAX Experience in 2010.
They will partner on the digital re-mastering of four upcoming Huayi Bros. films in the IMAX format. They will be released in theaters across China throughout the remainder of 2012. The companies also said they have agreed to present an additional three Huayi Bros. films in IMAX, bringing to eight the total of number of films included under the expanded partnership.
The first four films, announced at a press conference in Beijing, are martial arts action films Tai Chi 0, which will be released on Sept. 27, and sequel Tai Chi Hero, which follows on Oct. 25, historical drama Back to 1942, which doesn’t have a launch date yet, and adventure film Chinese Zodiac, which will reach IMAX theaters on Dec. 20.

Why do we love movies? Why is it an artistic medium that, arguably more so than any other, captures the imaginations of people all across the planet? These are questions that have been plumbed in depth by all manner of film critics and film historians. One slightly newer question worthy of dissection regards the re-releasing of classic films into multiplexes, often in fancier formats than were available upon its initial release. Stalwarts may rattle the sabers of purism and decry the prospect. However, there is an argument to be made that there are some films that would greatly benefit from this revisit to theaters. This week, Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark enjoys a theatrical IMAX re-release — and it deserves a second look on the big screen.
Detractors will wash their hands at the appearance of the word IMAX, but the format is perfectly suited to a film like Raiders. Going back to those critical examinations of our collective adoration for motion pictures, one of the phrases you’re bound to see again and again is “larger than life.” While IMAX does literally augment the image area and require a larger size of film, it’s not simply a case of everything bigger being inherently better.
In this case, the phrase larger than life extends beyond the literal sense and speaks to the escapism offered by the silver screen. Raiders of the Lost Ark is at its heart a classic style adventure story modeled after the movie serials of the 1930s and 1940s. These were thrilling, sweeping action films that played in segments before the feature presentation in old movie houses. These serials were meant to transport the audiences, who had not the benefit of the Internet, to worlds much grander and more exciting than the one they knew. Giant screen exhibitor IMAX on Tuesday said Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Dark Knight Rises has crossed the $100 million global box office mark.
The milestone came as Christopher Nolan’s tentpole release screened in 557 IMAX theaters worldwide during seven weeks of release.
That performance came via a $65.1 million in box office receipts from 332 IMAX screens domestically, and another $37.3 million taken in from 225 IMAX screens internationally, including in China where The Dark Knight Rises started screening in 75 digital theaters from Aug. 27.
Dialogue: Topper Andrew Cripps also eyes Middle East and Africa
During nearly 30 years in marketing and distribution, Andrew Cripps has become a leading authority on the business models and cultural nuances unique to every international market. In his new role as president of IMAX Europe, Middle East and Africa, he will apply his experience to expand the IMAX footprint. Cripps discusses his approach in different areas of the EMEA region with Robert Mitchell at IMAX's London offices, and looks at the opportunities offered by new technology and local productions.
Robert Mitchell: What is your key area of focus for IMAX in Europe, the Middle East and Africa?
Andrew Cripps: The primary area of focus at the moment is to expand the network across Europe. There are a lot of things you can then do: be far more flexible with programming; look at additional content, including European content. We're making a very significant investment in Europe because we believe the growth opportunities are there. Through the second quarter, IMAX EMEA box office this year was up 54% (to $58.1 million) over last year, so we're off to a great start.
RM:What are your goals for the expansion?
AC: I'd like to see us doubling the network in the next three to five years. We've got 101 theaters open, 35 in backlog. A lot of growth will come from the markets that are very strong with IMAX at the moment, but I think some of the growth is going to come from the big Western European countries that we're underrepresented in.
Moviemakers aren’t the only ones vying for a piece of China’s booming film market. IMAX has burst into China with its huge screens, going from 22 theaters in 2009 to 240 open or planned today. The mainland is now IMAX’s biggest market after the U.S., where it has 343 theaters.
China figures to become increasingly lucrative for the Canada-based IMAX. In February Beijing raised its limit on foreign films from 20 to 34 a year, and the extra 14 must all be 3-D, animated or IMAX movies. The deal nearly doubles the share of Chinese box-office receipts that movie producers may keep, to 25%, creating a bigger pot for IMAX and other theater chains.
The foundation for IMAX’s China business took years to build, starting in 1998 when Chief Executive Rich Gelfond made the first of his now 35 trips to the mainland. His strategy was to make friends with decision makers—members of state councils, mayors, deputy mayors—and ask: How should we do business in China? Year after year Gelfond would call on officials. Their demands varied from producing Chinese content in the IMAX format and exporting Chinese films to IMAX theaters overseas to opening IMAX theaters in third-tier cities, but he made sure they were met. He moved the company’s Asia headquarters from Singapore to Shanghai in 2002. As someone who has in her possession an actual Indiana Jones costume and has worn it multiple times, let me just say: this is really, really great news. Director Steven Spielberg and executive producer George Lucas have finally decided to take their classic (amazing, life philosophy-inspiring) film Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark back to theaters the right way. No, they're not releasing it in 3-D, they're taking it to IMAX for a Sept. 7 release date. Yeah. As in September 2012. As in next month. It will only run for one week, but there are a few very serious reasons this re-release is awesome news.
1. The Opening Scene Was Made to Be Seen in IMAX.
From the sweat dripping down Indy's brow as he makes the switch — the Idol for his bag of sand — to the epic high-speed escape from the cave as a giant boulder rolls his way on a course for sheer destruction, the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark was made to be seen on the big screen, so it's no wonder we'd want to see it on the even-bigger screen. And if that's only scene one, imagine what the rest of the film will be like sprawled across that over-sized canvas. Let me give you a hint: it will be nothing short of amazing. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was one of the biggest Hollywood hits of all time, and next month it will finally be projected on screens gigantic enough to suit it.
It was announced on Tuesday that the first Indiana Jones adventure will have a limited one-week run on giant-sized IMAX theaters across the country starting on September 7. The picture and sound have been digitally re-mastered to look and sound better than they ever have before. The IMAX conversion process was so thorough, it even won over the toughest audience you could imagine: director Steven Spielberg.
In a phone interview, the three-time Oscar winner told me he was "dubious" when he was first approached by the team at IMAX about bringing "Raiders" back. Spielberg said, "I didn't know if the 1981 print would stand up to a full IMAX transfer, so I came expecting a sort of grainy, muddy, and overly enlarged representation of the movie I had made  years ago. And I was blown away by the fact that it looked better than the movie I had made  years ago."
Spielberg said he was particularly impressed how the IMAX conversion was able to make up for some of the limitations he faced when he originally shot the film over three decades ago. "All the shadows in the earlier scenes that we shot in Hawaii [were] always kind of muddy anyway on 35mm," Spielberg explained, "because we couldn't schlep all of our big arc lights down into this valley." The restored version of the opening scenes was quite a revelation for him. He said, "Suddenly, there was definition in the shadows, which I had never seen before. And the shadows weren't murky and washed out; they were sharp as a tack." Spielberg joked, "I sat there, I think, probably with my mouth open a little wider than it normally is."
Spielberg commented that it wasn't just the image but also the sound that has been revitalized in this process. When the giant boulder comes rolling down after Indiana Jones, Spielberg said, "You'll see it full size, and you'll feel it in your stomach." It's the kind of revelation that would melt the face of any die-hard Indiana Jones fan (this time, with joy): "Raiders of the Lost Ark," the 1981 adventure film that introduced that globe-trotting archaeologist, will receive a one-week Imax release next month, Lucasfilm said on Tuesday.
"For me, it's always been the bigger the screen, the better," Steven Spielberg, who directed "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and the three subsequent "Indiana Jones" sequels, said Tuesday in a telephone interview. "It's the only marked contrast we have to the generations that are seeing our movies on phones and hand-held platforms. It's a complete relief to be able to see a film that many people have just experienced on a palm-sized platform technology, suddenly hurled at that them on an Imax-sized screen."
Lucasfilm, the studio of the "Indiana Jones" executive producer George Lucas, said the Imax version of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" will receive a one-week theatrical release beginning on Sept. 7, in advance of the Blu-ray release of the Indiana Jones movies, which will go on sale Sept. 18. Mr. Spielberg, who with the sound designer Ben Burtt supervised the conversion of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" to Imax, said that no special effects or other visual elements of the film were changed. In a summer where Hollywood has fielded nearly as many high-priced flops as blockbuster behemoths, one sector of the movie business has remained remarkably consistent – IMAX.
Audiences, particularly fanboys, have remained intensely loyal to its mammoth 70mm screens at a time when theatrical attendance domestically has declined.
Overall, IMAX, which has struggled in the past with the seasonal ups and downs of the movie business has been a more consistent performer. In the most recent quarter IMAX posted revenue growth of 22.7 percent. That outpaces the industry average of 13.4 percent. Profits increased six-fold to $11.1 million.
And even while the recent shootings at a Colorado theater have cast a shadow over the industry, the last month has been outstanding for the large-screen format. “The Dark Knight Rises” is shattering box-office records for IMAX, earning $50 million in just two weeks of release.
During the Batman’s sequel’s $160.8 million opening weekend, IMAX accounted for nearly 12 percent of the film’s box office, despite making up less than 5 percent of the screens showing the movie. A strong box office buoyed Imax profits as more filmmakers film bigger chunks of their movies for the massive screens, the longest bit so far being 72 minutes of Warner Bros. "The Dark Knight Rises," and two big releases shoot in Imax simultaneously for the first time.
Imax needs to ramp up camera production to meet increased demand, said CEO Richard Gelfond on a conference call Thursday.
"Prometheus" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" used Imax sequences. 2013 highlights include J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" sequel and "Catching Fire," the second "The Hunger Games" installment.
Gelfond began the investor call saluting victims of the tragic theater shooting in Aurora, Colo. at a "Dark Knight" screening last week. "Our thoughts go out to them," he said.
For the three months ended in June, net profit surged to $11.1 million from $1.8 million the year before. Revenue rose 23% to $70 from $57 million.
Total film revenue of $26 million was up from $19 million Production and Imax DMR (digital media remastering) revenues were $19.7 million vs. $12.4 million. Gross box office from DMR titles was $173 million from $108 million the year before. Average box office per screen in rose to $341,900 from $315,700.
Imax signed contracts for 40 theatre systems and installed 20 during the quarter. It increased its 2012 installations scheduled from current backlog to approximately 110 new theatres, from a previous outlook of 95 to 100 new theatres.
There were 280 theatre systems in backlog as of June 30, 2012 compared to 261 systems in backlog at the end of March and 294 systems in backlog in the 2011 second quarter.
Gelfond said China is its fastest growing market outside the U.S. through a partnership with the Dalian Wanda Group, which is in the process of acquiring U.S. exhib AMC Entertainment. IN 2008 the director Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight,” the second in his trilogy of Batman movies, introduced some audiences to a character not before seen in the franchise, or any studio narrative feature until that time. But that character wasn’t on the screen. It was the screen.
That would be Imax, a vast screen that can be as tall as an eight-story building. Though the name is popularly used to refer to screens, it is primarily a format involving special cameras and large-scale film, and before “Dark Knight” it had been known best for short documentaries about ocean life and space travel. Mr. Nolan shot parts of “The Dark Knight” using Imax cameras, with 30 minutes of such footage making it into the final film. When those images were seen in an Imax theater, they filled the screen from top to bottom with a giant, high-resolution image.

The real world threats of terrorism, political anarchy and economic instability make deep incursions into the cinematic comic book domain in The Dark Knight Rises. Big-time Hollywood filmmaking at its most massively accomplished this last installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy makes everything in the rival Marvel universe look thoroughly silly and childish. Entirely enveloping and at times unnerving in a relevant way one would never have imagined, as a cohesive whole this ranks as the best of Nolan's trio, even if it lacks -- how could it not? -- an element as unique as Heath Ledger's immortal turn in The Dark Knight. It's a blockbuster by any standard.
The director daringly pushes the credibility of a Gotham City besieged by nuclear-armed revolutionaries to such an extent that it momentarily seems absurd that a guy in a costume who refuses to kill people could conceivably show up to save the day. This is especially true since Nolan, probably more than any other filmmaker who's ever gotten seriously involved with a superhero character, has gone so far to unmask and debilitate such a figure. It is good to have fans in high places. IMAX heads into its biggest summer in history helped in part by Christopher Nolan shooting more than an hour of The Dark Knight Rises in the IMAX format. “Chris is unto himself the lead fanboy for the IMAX network,” IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond says. “He is so driven by quality and presentation. Following in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan and Brad Bird, director Francis Lawrence is planning to utilize the big big screen for the anticipated sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Polar bears tend to be camera shy, which caused problems for the filmmakers of the newWarner Bros./Imax adventure"To the Arctic,"opening Friday.
The 40-minute 3-D documentary examines extreme temperature changes in the Arctic, which has led to the permanent ice pack melting quickly and endangering the existence of animals such as polar bears, caribou, seals, walruses and birds that are indigenous to the region.
Narrated by Meryl Streep, "To the Arctic" is the latest movie from two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Greg MacGillivray ("The Living Sea," "Dolphins") and his producer son, Shaun MacGillivray ("Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk"). The film's editor, Stephen Judson, wrote the script.
The production lasted four years, including eight months on location in the Arctic — but for the first six trips, the filmmakers were unable to get any usable footage of polar bear mothers and cubs, the animals most closely associated with the Arctic.
"When it comes to wildlife filmmaking, you can have the best script in the world but you don't know what you are going to get until you are there," said Shaun. "We got incredible footage of caribou herds, good stories with other animals like the walrus and great aerial photography."
Then, on their last trip in 2010, the crew spent a month on a 130-foot ice breaker, the MS Havsel, in and around the seas of Svalbard, Norway. That is where they found their stars.
"We were with them for five days straight," Shaun said. "We got that incredible sense of both being emotionally connected to them, but also what it was like for a single mom polar bear to be raising two cubs in an environment that gets harder every day."
At one point, the ice floe the bears were resting on floated within 20 feet of the ice breaker. "Even then she would sniff at us, but she wasn't freaked," said Greg. "The captain of the boat ... he felt after observing her for a couple of days that 'this is the smartest bear I have ever been around. She is not expending energy to get away from us all. Bears I have seen expend energy — they jump in the water, they swim away and they walk along the ice floe to get away. But she said I am not going to expend any energy to get away from this boat. I am comfortable.'''
The first day they saw the trio, the mother and her cubs were sleeping and playing when suddenly, she began to dig a hole in the ice. "I said, 'Why is she doing that?' Maybe there is a seal there," said Greg.
But that wasn't the case. She actually fashioned a chair out of the hole. "She lounged back in the air and she huffed," said the director. "It was a certain kind of huff and all of a sudden, the two cubs came running over and it was time to nurse. She was on her back, vulnerable as she could be with her nose — which is more or less her early warning device — lower, not high like they want it to be. The captain was right. This is an exceptional bear. This is our story. We got to stay next to these bears as long as we possibly could. It was an exceptional experience."
There are many "Aww" moments in the film with the cubs rough-housing and playing hide and seek on the ice floe. One of the cubs loves to play with its own paw.
But there was a lot of heavy drama because the bears' primary food source, seals, are not as plentiful as they once were. So male polar bears are now devouring bear cubs for sustenance. The MacGillivrays were able to capture frantic moments when the mother bear was trying desperately to save her cubs. "Our hearts were in our throats," Shaun said, especially because their rule as filmmakers is that they can't interfere with Mother Nature.
Each time, though the mother bear was able to hold off the attack. "She was just so amazing to be able to stand up to the male polar bear and be able to communicate with her cubs to always stay in front of her," said Shaun.
"You just go, 'Wow. That is true courage and true love,'" Greg said.

Moscow, Sept. 9, 2011 – IMAX Corporation announced an expansion to its existing agreement with Kinomax for a new digital IMAX® theatre in Moscow, scheduled to open in 2013.
In June, IMAX announced an agreement with Kinomax to open three new IMAX theatres in Astrakhan, Ryazan and Tomsk. Today’s announcement means that IMAX is poised to have five theatres in operation with three under development in Moscow.

Ticket sales for 3-D movies more than doubled to $6.1 billion worldwide last year, driven by demand outside North America, IHS Inc. said. Markets other than North America generated $3.9 billion, or 64 per cent, of the revenue, an increase from 54 per cent the previous year, the Englewood, Colo. research company said Friday in a statement. The global total rose from $2.5 billion in 2009, IHS said. International sales have become increasingly important for three-dimensional movies. Through August 14, 2011, these titles, along with several other titles playing in the IMAX network have generated approximately $120 million of gross box office worldwide to date.
With actuals being reported for the weekend ended August 14, IMAX theatres generated approximately $5.5 million of box office globally, ~$2.5 million domestically and ~$3 million internationally, which included:
- approximately $2.2 million of box office from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2: An IMAX 3D Experience ($1.1 million domestic, $1.1 million international);
- approximately $1.4 million domestically from Final Destination 5: An IMAX 3D Experience;

Disney's "John Carter" will be released in IMAX 3D on March 9, 2012, along with its worldwide release, the studio announced Monday. The movie is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel, and is about a former military captain who finds himself transported to Mars "where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions among the inhabitants of the planet," according to the studio. This weekend, Transformers: Dark of the Moon: An IMAX 3D Experience set a record for the launch of a U.S. movie in China, generating $3.7 million of box office on 31 screens, for a per screen average of $120,000. This beats the prior per screen average record set by Avatar of $97,400. To date, the film has generated $45.5 million in IMAX box office worldwide, surpassing the $44 million of box office generated by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: The IMAX Experience, with theatres in Japan still to open.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2: An IMAX 3D Experience opens to a record $23.2 million in global IMAX box office. The film generated $15.2 million in domestic IMAX theatres and $8 million in international IMAX theatres.
The most ironic aspect of 3-D moviemaking jumps into the foreground with the opening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: Depth-of-field works most effectively when you hardly notice it. For the final film in the Potter series, which opens Friday, director David Yates and his team exercised restraint throughout. The result? Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is 3-D done right. Potter earned almost 50% more than previous midnight champion, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which earned $30 million from midnight shows when it was released in June 2010. The Harry Potter franchise is estimated to be the most profitable film franchise ever. About five years ago, Shia LaBeouf stormed the offices of Michael Bay, planning to rip the director's head off. The actor, then 20, had just auditioned for Bay's action opus Transformers and thought he nailed it. Bay seemed delighted when LaBeouf ad-libbed lines as the two made up their own bot-dialogue. Weeks passed, and no offer. Worse, word had spread among actors that Bay was using LaBeouf's lines to audition other actors. "I said, 'Dude, you're ripping me off,'" LaBeouf recalls. "He said he had other actors he liked, especially this guy in Canada. I was (furious)." Let's start with this: for the first time since "Avatar," I am going to recommend that you find the biggest and best 3D theater you can find and buy yourself a ticket, because "Transformers: Dark Of The Moon," especially seen in IMAX 3D, is an overwhelming sensory experience. The sound mix alone is more exciting than anything in the billion-dollar-bore of "Pirates 4." This is gigantic action we've never seen before, and Bay's reaction to shooting and cutting his film for 3D is to get better at what he does. The biggest Chinese film of the summer is literally that, the biggest, thanks to its simultaneous release on conventional and IMAX screens. Beginning Of The Great Revival (previously known as Birth of a Party), a big budget propaganda film timed to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the Communist Party of China, was released today in several thousand cinemas across the country. Directed by Han Sanping and Huang Jianxin, the film was made conventionally and converted into IMAX, where it now plays on 20 of the 24 commercial screens in China. Super 8 — which has become something of an obsession here at EW.com, as our recent bevy of posts on the film can attest — opens throughout the day on 325 screens in North America as part of a sneak preview push organized by Paramount Pictures and Twitter. The slate of showings is also a big deal for IMAX, which is hosting the majority of these previews: Never before has the exhibitor effectively opened a movie on this many of its locations.
“We have been talking for some time the notion about having a release window this early,” says Greg Foster, chairman and president of Filmed Entertainment at IMAX. “This is new territory for us. With writer-director J.J. Abrams Super 8 opening next week, I was recently able to interview him in London for our partners at Omelete. While Abrams likes to keep his films under wraps while they’re in production, by now you know Super 8 takes place in the summer of 1979 and it’s about a group of friends that discovers something not from this world while making a super 8 film. Mix in that it’s produced by Steven Spielberg, uses his Amblin logo (which should clue you into what kind of movie this is), and you’re got a great coming-of-age story that I think audiences are going to love.
During my interview with Abrams we talked about the secrecy surrounding the film, the fact that a super 8 movie is getting released in IMAX, how involved was he in the ARG/viral stuff, what does it mean to use the Amblin logo, and what are the Easter Eggs that people should look out for. He says “there are a couple of things hidden here and there,” and he also says “Leonard Nimoy is in the movie somewhere if you can find him.”
In addition, I also asked about the Star Trek sequel. With production not yet underway, I wondered if he’d be able to make the summer 2012 release date. He said “we’re working really hard to get that movie made as soon as possible, but we don’t want to rush anything. Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar® winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake.
Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox.
In helming “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christopher Nolan is utilizing IMAX® cameras even more extensively than he did on “The Dark Knight,” which had marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX® cameras. The results were so spectacular that the director wanted to expand the use of the large-format cameras for this film.
The screenplay for “The Dark Knight Rises” is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is being produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster “The Dark Knight.” The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. “The Dark Knight” is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.
Behind the scenes, “The Dark Knight Rises” reunites the director with several of his longtime collaborators, all of whom worked together on the “The Dark Knight.” The creative team includes director of photography Wally Pfister, who recently won an Oscar® for his work on Nolan’s “Inception”; production designer Nathan Crowley; editor Lee Smith; and Oscar®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (“Topsy-Turvy”). In addition, Paul Franklin and Chris Corbould, who both won Oscars® for the effects in “Inception,” will supervise the visual and special effects, respectively. I was sucker punched by “Sucker Punch.” Not being a big fan of action-fantasy movies in general or specifically
Zack Snyder’s digital-heavy movies like “300″ and “Watchmen” (though I
admired “Legend of the Guardians” fairly well), I was not expecting to
like “Sucker Punch” much at all.
Boy, do I love finding out I was wrong and winding up enjoying a
movie as much as I did “Sucker Punch.” And I have yet to regret going
the extra mile to see the movie on a giant full-size IMAX
screen. “Sucker Punch” was no exception — this is yet another that
translates extremely well to the larger screen and superior sound system
The movie opens Friday (March 25) on 229 IMAX screens domestically and
at least 78 IMAX screens internationally simultaneous with Warner Bros.’
release of the movie in traditional theaters.
For the first 15 min. – 20 min. of the two-hour film I was not having
a good time, though the opening was not at all what I expected. While
visually dynamic and interesting, it seemed like it was stylized
exploitation, going for the lowest common denominator in starting out
like a horror film with scenes of parental rape of a stepchild and then
segueing into a setting at an insane asylum for young scantily-clad
orphan girls who were being abused by an administrator acting as a pimp
(the latter part in the vivid imagination of our protagonist).
Then it morphed into wild anachronistic fantasy mixing modern technology
into settings with helicopters and zeppelins flying over medieval
castles. The sexy helpless girls suddenly became super-humans, using
huge swords and giant machine guns and leaping inhumanly high. They were
never slowed for a second after being batted roughly against walls
during epic battles with zombies, robots, and dragons. Battle scenes
that seemed to blur World War I with World War II all intermingled with
primary settings that seemed to be of 1950s era Americana. Little of it was logical and the story seemed somewhat hard to follow at times.
Then, about the same time the first of many great songs in the movie was
introduced — an ear-catching unlikely version of the Eurythmics’ "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”
sung by star Emily Browning (off-screen, gratefully not in musical
style like “Moulin Rouge”) — I decided to abandon all traditional
viewing perspectives for this movie and just enjoy the ride.
What a pleasure to see such a rare fresh approach to cinematic style
and entertainment, from Snyder’s trademark color-saturated and/or grainy
washed-out settings to his brave and effective framing of shots, such
as an extreme close-up of the lead actress on the left half of the frame
and another actor in a medium shot on the right side and also in full
focus. And writer/director/producer Snyder got some terrific
performances out of relatively unfamiliar lead Australian actress
Browning (“The Uninvited”), here with stark white hair and very fair
skin, and fairly unknown lead villain Oscar Isaac (“Robin Hood,” “Body
of Lies”), who is brilliantly intimidating (don’t miss his performance
of Roxy Music’s “Love Is the Drug,” with co-villain Carla Gugino during
the closing credits).
There are also fun smaller turns by more familiar actors such as Jena
Malone (“Bastard out of Carolina,” Into the Wild”), Jon Hamm (“Mad
Men”), Scott Glenn, and especially a departure role for “High School

By the end of this year, Imax projects it will have about 600 screens, up from 266 in 2005. That could mean more prosperous times ahead, since Imax says its screens generate nearly five times the revenue of those at a traditional cinema. There's also the cool factor: Imax's giant curved screens, once best known for showing feel-good nature films at museums, have become among the hottest dates in Hollywood: Top directors such as James Cameron and J.J. Abrams fight to open their special-effects-laden hits at Imax venues to crank up the wow factor. "The benefits to the studio, I'm sure, involve higher ticket prices and having another kind of aspect to publicize. But the real benefit is that it's immersive and massive," says Abrams, who is producing the next installment of Viacom's (VIA.B) Mission: Impossible franchise for an Imax release. company—just about everything."
Legacy has generated $39.4 million
in IMAX box office worldwide to date. IMAX domestic theatres have contributed
$29.6 million to the total, while $9.8 million has come from international IMAX
This weekend (December 31
through January 2), TRON grossed ~$4 million in domestic IMAX theatres and ~$2
million in international IMAX theatres, for a total of approximately $6 million
in IMAX worldwide.
IMAX today announced that for the fifty-two weeks ended December 31, 2010, IMAX DMR® global gross box office reached a record $546 million, more than doubling the Company’s previous global box office record of $270 million achieved in 2009. The Company’s DMR gross box office for the fourth quarter of 2010 reached $102 million compared to $101 million in the fourth quarter of last year.Gross box office generated from the Company’s original documentaries including Hubble 3D, Under the Sea 3D and Deep Sea 3D totaled $41 million.
Attendance continued to rise at Bill Warren's new IMAX theater at 21st
and Tyler over the weekend, ranking it fourth among the specialty
theaters in the United States, company officials said.In the latest attendance figures available, from Thursday, 2,150 people attended "Tron" the day before Christmas Eve, Warren said. The IMAX opened Dec. 17 and has ranked among the top 10 specialty theaters in the country since its opening.

Sony Corp., Discovery Communications and IMAX Corp., has added six new titles, original series and acquisitions, to its programming slate for the upcoming 3D network. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I has generated a total of $39.2 million in IMAX box office worldwide through December 12. Domestic IMAX theatres have generated $27 million of the total, while $12.2 million has come from international IMAX locations.
For the weekend of December 10-12, Harry Potter grossed $1.2 million at domestic IMAX theatres and $0.9 million at international IMAX theatres, for a total of ~$2.1 million worldwide.
Most of us
have experienced it at one time or another: We pay good money at the door of a
movie theatre, plop down in our seats with our popcorn and soda pop and train
our eyes on the screen. The movie starts and then, just as quickly stops. Best

Disney, DreamWorks and IMAX announced today that two of DreamWorks’ 2011 Touchstone Pictures releases, I Am Number Four and Real Steel, will open day-and-date in digital IMAX® theatres around the world. Both films are produced by DreamWorks and will be released under Disney’s Touchstone banner. Helmed by D.J. Caruso, I Am Number Four is an action-packed thriller about an extraordinary teen hunted by ruthless enemies. Settling in a small Ohio town, he discovers powerful new abilities as well as a connection to the others who share his destiny. The film has a US release date of February 18, 2011.
Set in a world of next-generation boxing, Real Steel is a gritty action drama directed by Shawn Levy. Hugh Jackman headlines as washed-up fighter Charlie Kenton, who lost his chance at a title when 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Real Steel is scheduled for release in the US on October 7, 2011.

IMAX Corporation and ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group, Europe's largest exhibitor, today announced an agreement to install two new digital IMAX(R) theatre systems under joint venture agreements in Mallorca and Milan.
The Spanish location will open under the Cinesa brand in Mallorca. The location in Italy will operate under the UCI brand in Milan. Both locations are scheduled to open on May 20th, 2011. These new theatres are the latest in a surge of IMAX theatre system signings and openings in Western Europe this year in markets such as the United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands and Germany.
Today's announcement adds to ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group's position as the largest operator of IMAX theatres in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region.
