Hi! I’m Adam from the IMAX communications team. This week some members of the IMAX team headed to Austin, Texas for the 2013 SXSW Conference- the convergence of all things interactive, film and music.
It was an extremely interesting and busy week as the team attended several industry panels and events, met with partners and hosted IMAX’s first ever SXSW party. Not to mention consuming an enormous amount of delicious BBQ.
I will be discussing some of the key trends we observed at the conference next week, but for now I wanted to provide a recap of some of my highlights.
Mashable brought grumpy cat to Austin. Need I say more?
Universal Pictures held an awesome party Monday night to promote Joseph Kosinski and Tom Cruises’ upcoming movie, Oblivion. The event featured some really cool props from the movie, including costumes, a spacecraft and drone (pictured below).
I visited our friends at the Bullock Texas State History Museum IMAX® theatre and the chief projectionist David Ripper took me behind the scenes of the projection room and let me check out the new 3D documentary, Flight of the butterflies. Absolutely stunning movie and a lot of fun watching the kids in the audience reaching out to try and grab the butterflies!
On Tuesday night, IMAX sponsored the conference’s Film Intermission Party at the Stage on Sixth. We had an awesome turn out and had a great time getting to meet some of the conference attendees. The party featured some excellent tunes by DJ Presley, corn hole, and a flip-book station. We were also able to be one of the first companies to launch Dynamic Mosaic – a solution powered by Mass Relevance that allowed us to integrate real-time social content from multiple sources - including Instagram, Facebook, Vine, Twitter and Google+ - into a dynamic visual experience (really cool tech!).
A major highlight of the party for me was being able to interview guests on what movies they were looking forward to and trends/advancements they would like to see in cinema over the next few years. We got some amazing responses and look forward to posting a compilation of some of the interviews shortly.
Thanks to everyone who came out and to those who followed the Dynamic Mosaic online!
Most of all, it was extremely enlightening to listen to and interact with pioneers and thought leaders in the entertainment and technology space. At IMAX, we are always trying to think of the next big thing and it was a great opportunity to see how other innovators in the industry are pushing the limits of what’s possible.
That’s it for now, but as I said earlier - more to come next week on trends I observed at the conference and interviews from the party!
