There’s something to be said for a classic film that moves the hearts of viewers everywhere. That’s exactly what we’re saying about The Wizard of Oz which has been restored, converted to 3D and digitally re-mastered to take audiences down that yellow brick road for the very first time in IMAX® 3D theatres.
The Wizard of Oz is the oldest film to ever be converted to 3D and IMAX® 3D, but restoring a film that is 75 years old was no easy feat. The Warner Bros. restoration team spent approximately 16 months working with Prime Focus on the 3D conversion – with more than 1,000 people working together to deliver the best possible IMAX® 3D version of this classic film.
Take a look at the IMAX® Behind the Frame video which features IMAX’s Lorne Orleans who oversaw the digital re-mastering of the film and Warner Bros.’ Ned Price who has been a part of the restoration efforts of The Wizard of Oz for nearly 25 years.
Watching DOROTHY™, TIN MAN™, SCARECROW™and the COWARDLY LION™ come to life in IMAX is absolutely breathtaking. The IMAX®3D version reveals details intrinsic to the original film’s negative in more clarity than ever before including DOROTHY™’s freckles and the texture of the burlap in the SCARECROW™’s face.
IMAX received the honor of premiering The Wizard of Oz in IMAX® 3D at the TCL Chinese Theatre where it originally premiered in 1939. The premiere took place in conjunction with the opening ceremony for the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX, the very first IMAX theatre in Hollywood.
