Pteranodon means "winged and toothless," two characteristics which define this amazing flying reptile. Pteranodons were about six feet long, had large bony crests on their heads and thanks to hollow bones, weighed in at only 35 pounds.

Their most amazing feature of course is their wings which spanned over 25 feet! Pteranodon's lightweight wings were covered with a thin, leathery membrane. The rest of their body may have been covered with fur. Pteranodons were the largest flying creatures ever and would dwarf even the largest present-day birds like Eagles and Condors. They flew much like many birds do today: flapping their wings to gain speed and altitude then soaring over a vast terrain to find food.

Despite the fact that Pteranodon had no teeth, they ate meat: mostly fish; crabs and insects. Paleontologists believe that Pteranodons may have scooped up fish from the surface of the ocean with their beaks like Pelicans do today. Like T-rex, they were also scavengers and fed off the carcasses of dead animals.

Pteranodon sadly did not survive the "Great Extinction" but their characteristics live on in the great birds which fly over the Canadian Badlands today.
