"I am thrilled to introduce Sergio Grisanti to the world. For years he has been a highly respected commercial artist. When I was first exposed to his art for Pacific Rim I knew instantly that he was a powerhouse of talent. He created the Jaeger posters/card art we used at Wondercon. Without any hesitation I asked him to create this new IMAX FANFIX art. Look at it closely- with a magnifying glass! So much going on! Such power! Such beauty! Sergio loves his Kaijus and his Mecha, and it shows. The poster, like my film, is a tribute to well-loved things. I wish all the fans the best time at the first IMAX screenings of PACIFIC RIM. Enjoy!"
–Guillermo del Toro
We had the pleasure of speaking with artist Sergio Grisanti about his experience creating artwork for Pacific Rim and finding the inspiration to create the IMAX FANFIX™ print.
Pacific Rim IMAX FANFIX™ Artist Sergio Grisanti
Sergio was charged with finding an artistic interpretation of the film that was unique from any of the current artwork being used in the film.
With the vivid memory of the epic battle between Gipsy Danger and Leatherback stained in his memory – his wheels began to turn to find a way to bring the intensity of that scene and to deliver the feeling of utter destruction.
Inspired by his love for comic book cover art, Sergio decided to recreate this moment as if it were a panel of a comic book. It was going to be a challenge to recreate such an impressive scene into a static image so Sergio’s plan was to make it colorful, loud and massive! He took his first idea of two gigantic figures crashing through debris and rubble and ran with it.
Although there were no specific parameters, Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro gave special instructions of what he wanted the artwork to portray. Guillermo wanted to display a sense of scale that made Gipsy Danger and Leatherback look larger-than-life while showing the damage caused by their battle in the small details of the image.
Sergio took this as a challenge and created a fun scene with vivid colors that popped on the white background. Look closely and you’ll see things flying everywhere as these two creatures come head-to-head. He describes the artwork as “Gipsy Danger and Leatherback are in the midst of the greatest fight ever and they are taking everything around them along for the ride. Leatherback is using his strength to overpower Gipsy but I like to think that Gipsy has something up his sleeve.”

Sergio’s love for movies at an early age led to an apprenticeship with a cinema illustrator who guided him through his early career. He was able to learn first-hand the keys to illustrating traditionally and through digital arts. He’s worked as a sketch artist at a motion picture design agency which ultimately led to becoming a creative director. He’s worked on other blockbuster films like The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Wrath of the Titans.
Although Sergio modestly refutes that he “specializes” in creating artwork for movies, WB exec Massey Rafani thought differently – he gave Sergio the opportunity to work on this IMAX FANFIX™ and was instrumental in introducing him to Guillermo’s team.
We are thrilled to have such a talented artist create this print for our most beloved fans who will be the first to see Pacific Rim in IMAX® theatres.
