Inside Hubble 3D with @Astro_Mike

By IMAX 上 三月 10, 2014

“Nothing brings back the memories like what we are going to see here. It is extraordinary.” – Astronaut Mike Massimino

Filmed with the IMAX® 3D Cargo Bay Camera during the second spacewalk, astronaut Michael Good (on the Shuttle’s remote manipulator arm) assists astronaut Michael Massimino into foot restraints to position him inside the Hubble Space Telescope without disturbing sensitive instruments he must work around. On-orbit footage captured by astronauts during the final historic mission is featured in the newest IMAX 3D film, Hubble 3D. Hubble 3D is an IMAX and Warner Bros. Pictures production, in cooperation with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). © 2010 Warner Bros. Courtesy of NASA.

Recently Columbia University’s new “Engineering Icons” series brought in NASA Astronaut Mike Massimino to share his experience during space travel. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, around 400 guests came to watch an exclusive screening of the 2010 IMAX documentary, Hubble 3D, as well as to participate in a Q&A moderated by Dean Mary C. Boyce.

THE LAUNCH

Massimino described what it was like to sit in the shuttle right before and during takeoff. What do you think of the launch scene in Hubble 3D?

FIXING HUBBLE

In Hubble 3D, Massimino and his crew are documented as they complete complex repairs on the Hubble space telescope.  Attendees got the opportunity to hear personal anecdotes from Astronaut Mike’s incredible space experiences.

ON RETURNING TO SPACE

One curious fan asked if Astronaut Mike will be visiting space in the near future. Massimino responded that he didn’t think so and that he will be “staying on the planet” for the time being. He felt that the Hubble mission was something he “wanted to be a part of” and he “felt fulfilled and satisfied” after completing it.

Columbia’s SEAS school will continue the 150th anniversary celebration throughout the rest of 2014 and  check back on the IMAX blog for more adventures in space.
