Hey, IMAX fans! Historic news!
For those of you who aren’t braving the crowds and showing off your best cosplay at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, I’d like to share some awesome highlights from the July 20 world premiere of Star Trek Beyond, the third installment in the global blockbuster franchise from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot, which opens today in IMAX® theatres worldwide.
For starters, the event marked the first time ever that a Hollywood film received its world premiere in an open-air IMAX theatre. And the whole space looked incredible!
IMAX technicians, led by Eric Jacques, VP of Theatre Development Technology, went to great lengths to ensure that the temporary IMAX theatre maintained the proper specs to feature the film in the immersive IMAX® format.
What made the event even more special was the film was scored live in its entirety by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.
In its initial announcement, director Justin Lin commented on the event saying, “I am thrilled to celebrate the premiere of the film together with the fans at Comic-Con and excited for everyone there to experience Michael Giacchino’s incredible score played live.”
The film’s talent, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, John Chu and Sofia Boutella, along with Lin and producer J.J. Abrams were all in attendance.
Fans also showed off their best Trekkie-selves as some dressed up to compete in a fan costume contest.
It really was a night to remember—and one for the history books!
Make sure you check out the live coverage from the event below and go see Star Trek Beyond now playing in IMAX® 3D!
