Hey IMAX fans!
Happy Friday and welcome back to another edition of Friday Feature. For this week’s post, we’re spotlighting Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which launches today in IMAX® theatres worldwide.
In case you missed the news, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 marks the latest addition to a bellwether year for IMAX with twice the number of films that have incorporated the use of IMAX cameras and/or are specially formatted exclusively for IMAX than ever before. Read more about it HERE.
For Vol. 2, several sequences of the film were specially formatted and presented in an expanded 1.9:1 aspect ratio. This means IMAX audiences will actually see 26% more of the image than in standard theatres for a truly unique experience in IMAX.
But don’t just take our word for it. Director James Gunn is also super stoked for special IMAX formatting:
In addition to the expanded aspect ratio, IMAX fans will also experience what we call 3D frame-breaks—special 3D effects that actually expand outside the confines of the standard letterbox presentation. As Gunn states, it was an effect he utilized for the first Guardians and chose to replicate for Vol. 2.
