Playa Vista, CA — July 10, 2019 — IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) today announced a partnership with Spike Jonze through which the visionary filmmaker will serve as the first-ever Artist-in-Residence for IMAX Entertainment. In his role, Jonze will serve as a driving creative and curatorial force for the global entertainment technology company, collaborating with the its leadership to identify new creative opportunities and partnerships across its platform.
"I love seeing movies in IMAX. I love the room. I love the sound. I love the picture. The possibilities and their openness to experiment with things that can be done in that room — whether in film, music, live, or beyond — are very exciting to me,” said Jonze.
“Spike Jonze is one of the most innovative creators of our time, having made a wildly successful career of reshaping audience expectations and experiences across filmmaking, music, and culture,” said Megan Colligan, President of IMAX Entertainment. “As more artists look to bring their work to life in the IMAX Experience, Spike’s guidance will help us continue to evolve how we empower creators and engage audiences worldwide through our unique platform.”
An Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Jonze has created pioneering storytelling across virtually every visual medium throughout his more than 30-year career. His feature filmmaking career began with Being John Malkovich, for which he was nominated for Best Director, and continued with critically acclaimed hits Adaptation, Where the Wild Things Are, and Her, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. One of the most influential music video directors of all time, Jonze has collaborated with artists including Kanye West, Beastie Boys, Daft Punk, Weezer, Björk, Fatboy Slim, and Sonic Youth. Jonze also was a co-creator and executive producer of MTV’s Jackass.
Jonze continues to experiment and push boundaries in collaboration with some of the most distinctive artists and innovative brands throughout culture. Earlier this year, he directed a single-take live music video for Karen O and Danger Mouse’s single “Woman” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Last year, he directed Apple’s widely lauded “Welcome Home” ad featuring fKa Twigs. In the live medium, Jonze co-created and co-produced Frank Ocean’s “Blonded” festival tour, among other projects in a variety of formats.

The IMAX network includes more than 1,500 theaters across more than 80 territories worldwide. In his role, Jonze will serve as a catalyst to curate IMAX theaters and induce artistic expression on its platform.
He will collaborate with the company to support IMAX shooting and distribution globally, as it works closely with its exhibition and studio partners on theatrical events.
The announcement follows on the heels of a number of successful experiments by IMAX to drive utilization of its screens in new ways. On June 26, IMAX premiered the one-reeler “ANIMA,” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and scored and starring Thom Yorke of Radiohead, in a one-night-only event that sold out theaters from Los Angeles to Moscow. On July 1, IMAX screened the concert film “Soundgarden: Live from the Artists Den — The IMAX Experience” in a one-night event across more than 30 markets worldwide.
