RIDLEY SCOTT’S MOST EPIC MOMENTS IN IMAX
========================================

_To celebrate the release of GLADIATOR II, we look back at some of the director’s IMAX filmography._

Ridley Scott is a time traveler. Whether it’s taking us back through revolutionary France or blasting us into a futuristic space journey, there are few directors who jump along the timeline of humanity with such effortless ease.  Naturally, this makes his films the perfect stories to be experienced in IMAX.

From the furthest reaches of the galaxy to the annals of antiquity, IMAX is no stranger to a little timeline jumping ourselves. Read on as we revisit some of our favorite Scott films in IMAX, then grab your tickets to see GLADIATOR II this weekend.

**BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT**
---------------------------------

In 1982, Ridley Scott took us to a stark dystopian future that was ahead of its time – where advanced replicants roam and challenge our ideas of what it means to be human. Based on the novel _Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep?_ the film went on to gain legendary status as a cult classic. While a few different versions of it exist, it wasn’t until 2007’s 25th anniversary edition, BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT, that audiences finally got the edit intended by the director.

It was this version that then hit IMAX screens in 2017, restored from the original negatives and featuring a new sound mix as well as a few other enhancements helmed by Scott himself. As he says in this clip, [the FINAL CUT version of the film is his favorite(opens in new window)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGTywwnEuH4).

**NAPOLEON**
-------------

Somewhere between lover and fighter exists the complicated narrative of NAPOLEON. Although it suffered from some pandemic-related shooting delays, the film was built on solid foundation. Scott tapped historians, and his own research alongside the screenwriter to flesh out the interior life of the famous Frenchman. Scott would draw out storyboards by hand to provide guidance for everything from story to location scouting.

The expanse of this total immersion in Napoleon’s world is evident in its IMAX presentation- complex battle scenes off set by moments of intimacy as the film delves into his chaotic relationship with wife Josephine. Together, we see Scott weave together a period piece that forms a vividly rich tapestry of a name known by so many.

**ALIEN: COVENANT**
--------------------

The ALIEN franchise is perhaps one of cinema’s most beloved. Well-regarded by sci-fi fans and casual moviegoers alike, there’s a reason why it has endured for almost 50 years now. Scott’s original 1979 film ALIEN set the stage for what an interplanetary horror could look like. While other directors have since come in to make their own mark on the series, Scott returned to helm both 2012’s PROMETHEUS and 2017’s ALIEN: COVENANT, both released in IMAX.

[COVENANT truly took “bigger is better” to new heights(opens in new window)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7QF0PffiwU) with its sweeping space-scapes and tension laden action, amplified all that much more when screened in IMAX. Widely regarded as one of the more terrifying endings in an ALIEN film, even if no one could hear you scream in space, they certainly could in the cinema.
