FRIDAY FEATURE: IMAX Heads Offer Up Advice During ‘Breaking Into The Business’ Live Event
Фев 3, 2017

Welcome back to another edition of Friday Feature, IMAX fans!

As part of a new series from TheWrap and IMAX called Breaking Into the Business — an interactive symposium featuring industry professionals who dole out career advice to local students — IMAX at its Playa Vista headquarters hosted more than 90 students from Loyola Marymount University for a night focused on digital.

Kicking off the evening, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond and IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster were joined by Tim Staples, co-founder and CEO of Shareability, and Sophia Dilley, VP of development and production at Route One Entertainment, for a panel discussion and Q&A talking about their own experiences and advice for the college-aged crowd on how to navigate today’s professional landscape.

“Guys, the best way to get a job in the industry is to buy the company,” Gelfond quipped, before adding on a more serious note:

“It’s a bifurcated world,” Gelfond said. “On one hand, you have these big companies (like Google), which may be harder to break into; but I think anyone with an iPhone and a dream can go out and do their own thing.”

Near the end of the discussion, each panelist was asked to provide the crowd one piece of professional advice. For Gelfond, it was all about persistence. “It’s tough,” he said. “You’ve got to knock on so many doors and send out tons of resumes; and if you quit, no one is going to be there to pick you up. You have to pick yourself up.”

Foster, meanwhile, said simply: “Find one thing that you’re better at doing than anyone else … and work really, really hard at that skill.”

Following the panel, guests were treated to a special screening of the Academy Award®-nominated La La Land in IMAX.

IMAX and TheWrap continue the series with two remaining events in partnership with The University of Southern California and The University of California, Los Angeles.
