The IMAX Theatre at the Minnesota Zoo is located in Apple Valley, a southern suburb of the Twin Cities, just 10 minutes south of Mall of America. The theatre shares the same parking lot as the Minnesota Zoo.

From Minneapolis:

Take Interstate 35W south to Highway 62 east. Exit taking Highway 77 south and follow it to County Road 38 east. Follow the brown-colored “Zoo” signs. We share the parking lot with the Minnesota Zoo.

From St. Paul:
Take Interstate 35E south to Highway 77 south. Exit on County Road 38 east. Follow the brown-colored “Zoo” signs. We share the parking lot with the Minnesota Zoo.

From South of Apple Valley:
Take Interstate 35 north to 35E north. Take Highway 77 south to County Road 38 east. Follow the brown-colored “Zoo” signs. We share the parking lot with the Minnesota Zoo.
Take Highway 52 north to County Rd 42 west. Take Johnny Cake Ridge Road north to County Road 38 (McAndrews Road) west. Follow the brown-colored “Zoo” signs. We share the parking lot with the Minnesota Zoo.


The IMAX Theatre at the Minnesota Zoo is serviced by the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) bus line. With the launch of the new Red Line bus service, routes to the Zoo have changed. You can connect the Red Line at the Mall of America to the Cedar Grove Transit Station and take a connecting bus (Route 440) to the Zoo. This service is offered seven days a week, on the hour. Free parking for IMAX only patrons. Take a left from Zoo Blvd. where two parking lots are available (Camel and Gibbon). The IMAX Theatre is visible from both lots.

On busier days the Zoo staff will direct traffic to the East and South parking lots. During this time, please state "IMAX" to an employee and they will direct you to go left, not right. This will take you to Camel and Gibbon lots. (Closer to IMAX).

During concerts at the zoo, staff will be taking zoo parking fees at the gate. Please inform an attendant you are going to the IMAX theatre for entrance.

Adult night out at the Minnesota Zoo event, please allow yourself extra time on the following dates;

What is the price of a Director’s Club membership?
The Director’s Club membership costs $25 per year and entitles you to all the perks listed. You can purchase and sign up for a membership by visiting the theatre website.

How long does my membership last?
Your Director’s Club membership expires one year from your initial sign up. Once your Director’s Club membership is expired, you can opt to renew your membership for $25.

Is the special member pricing available online?
Absolutely! Once you login using your Director’s Club membership information, the special member pricing will be available to you.

How many tickets can I buy at special member pricing?
You are able to purchase up to 4 of each special member priced ticket per visit or transaction online.

How will I be notified about early bird notifications?

What does Documentary and DMR mean?
A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record, they usually are about 45 minutes or less.

Most 35mm films go through either a 2K or 4K resolution intermediate process, then "scaled" back up when printed on film for projection. IMAX has its own proprietary DI procedure called DMR (Digital Media Remastering), which is how 35mm films get converted to the IMAX format. They are usually about 1 hour or longer. Another term is Full Length Movie.

Can I refund a ticket(s) that I purchased?
All tickets purchased for the IMAX are non-refundable.
If you are unable to make the original show time on your ticket(s), we are able to exchange them for a different date and Showtime at our box office BEFORE the start of the original movie date and time. Once the show has happened we are not able to swap your ticket(s). Or we can give you a gift card with the ticket purchased amount, to use another time or on gift shop items.

Do you have reserved seating?
Yes, all Hollywood feature shows have reserved seating.

Do you offer wheelchair accessible spots?
As is designated on the seating chart when you purchased your tickets, we do have wheelchair accessible spots in our auditorium, In Row C they are 1, 7, 8, 15, 16, 23, 24, and 30. There are no physical seats in those spots.

Do you offer closed captioning?
The IMAX Theater is pleased to offer its guests CaptiView™, a digitally compatible closed caption viewing system, created by Doremi Cinema, for all IMAX digital presentations. The CaptiView™ system consists of a small captioning display unit with a flexible support arm that fits into the IMAX seat's cup holder.

Where is the IMAX located?
The IMAX Theatre at the Minnesota Zoo is located on the Minnesota Zoo property, sharing the same parking lot. You enter Zoo Blvd. (the main entrance) from McAndrews, between Johnny Cake Ridge Rd. and Flagstaff Ave.

Do you offer Gift Cards?
Yes, we have gift cards for sale at the IMAX box office or by calling group sales at (952) 997.9714, we'll mail it to you directly.  They come in any denomination you like. You can use your IMAX Theatre gift card to see any movie or buy any product at our theatre Gift Shop.

Can I use a gift card online?
Gift cards can only be used at the theatre box office and Gift Shop.

Can I use passes online?
Passes can only be used at the theatre box office.  They must state IMAX Theatre at the Minnesota Zoo on the pass.  We do not accept passes or gift cards from Regal, Cinemark, AMC or Fandango.

Are there bike racks?
Yes, there are bike racks located in the parking lot near the walking paths leading to the building.

What time should I arrive to the IMAX?
Plan on being at the IMAX Theater 15 – 20 minutes prior to the start time of the show you plan on seeing. If you purchase your tickets in advance you can proceed directly to the IMAX Auditorium doors.

We encourage you to plan ahead before visiting the IMAX. Since we are located on the Minnesota Zoo property there are often times many events going on that can slow down commuter travel. If we expect larger than normal amounts of guests due to the popularity of a particular movie we will alert guests via social media, Facebook & Twitter.

Do you have a concession stand?
We offer a full slate of traditional concession items. We also have specialty items like pizza, chicken strips, mozzarella sticks, BBQ sliders, and mini buffalo bites.

Do you serve alcohol?
We do serve adult beverages with a valid ID. There is a 2 drink max per person per transaction so please plan accordingly. Alcohol is served during the time of 9am-midnight, daily.

Do you show trailers prior to your films?
Yes & no. On occasion we are limited on the amount of trailers we show.

Do you show films in 2D or 3D?
We show both formats so please pay close attention to the tickets you are purchasing as the show and show time will specifically say 3D if the presentation you are seeing will be presented in the format.

I purchased IMAX tickets in advance but I’ve not received an email with my tickets?
If you purchased your ticket in advance but have not received your electronic tickets via email, please check your spam or junk folder.  If they are not there, then contact us at our theatre box office (952) 997-9720) during normal operating hours and we can print your tickets for you, even the day of the show. Pease come prepared with the credit card you purchased the tickets with and your photo ID.

I ordered my tickets online using PayPal. I never received a confirmation email but my credit card was charged. What should I do?
This usually happens because the email address was entered incorrectly. Call the theatre box office and ask to speak to a manager. (952) 997-9720 The manager can correct the email and one should be sent to you after correction.

Do I need to print my tickets at home before I get to the IMAX?
You do not need to print your tickets, if you can produce them on your phone.

Do you have a costume policy?
Costumes will be permitted, but for your safety and to not detract from the movie-going experience we ask that all masks and helmets be removed prior to entering the theater auditorium. We also ask that weapons that resemble firearms or that would make other guests feel uncomfortable stay home.

Can I bring in outside food or drinks?
We do not allow any outside food or drinks into the theatre.

Do you allow bags in the IMAX theatre?
No large bags, backpacks, duffel bags, suitcases and briefcases will be allowed in the theater. Plan to leave them at home or in your vehicle.

What time do you open doors to the theatre and what time do you close?
Doors open 30 minutes before the first show of the day and lock 15 minutes after the last show has started. Please see movies and times for start of the first show and last show time.
