Hey, IMAX fans!
For this week’s Friday Feature, I’m answering the call—and feeling a little possessed—to write about Sony Pictures’ very funny, multi-dimensional (alright, no more puns!) new action-comedy Ghostbusters, opening today for one week only in IMAX® 3D theatres.
By now, you’ve probably heard of the Paul Feig-directed comedy starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth.
What you likely haven’t heard, however, is that the film features some really cool effects that make the most out of 3D—and especially the IMAX presentation.
Variety’s Peter Debruge described it well in his review of Ghostbusters saying, “… the ghosts here really are frightening (especially in 3D screenings of the film), when they literally appear to leap off the screen, projecting ectoplasm past the confines of the widescreen frame.”
Feig also uses the technique to great effect with shots of the ghost-busting gals blasting their proton packs.
Insider’s note: You really want to make sure you see the film in IMAX 3D—the only place where you’ll be sure to witness this fun effect in all its awesomeness! What’s more, the effect will expand beyond the widescreen frame to fill the entire 1.43:1 aspect ratio exclusively in IMAX® with Laser locations (listed here).
But really, don’t take our word for it. Feig, himself, gushed over the film’s IMAX presentation saying, “It’s some kind of crazy alchemy that happens with IMAX. It’s just night and day over the experience you get in a regular theatre.
“The IMAX Experience® just took what we already loved and took it up 100%,” he added.
